The Sun is Also a Star – by Nicola Yoon

Front over of the book The Sun is Also a Star, by Nicola Yoon

“Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?”

I could have read this book in one sitting. It was so hard to put down The Sun is Also a Star to go to sleep or to go to work or to eat. It was really that good. I know some people avoid YA fiction because of the stereotype of “vampire novels” and the like. Some of us love a good vampire novel, but for those who don’t, this could be the YA book for you. Natasha and Daniel are New York City teenagers facing both contemporary and timeless issues – high-pressure parenting, immigration status, falling in love (or not), high expectations and disappointment.  The well-developed, diverse protagonists alternate point-of-view throughout the novel, with a few chapters dedicated to peripheral perspectives. I admit that there are some not-quite-believable coincidences that push the narrative forward, but I think part of being an open-minded reader is the potential to suspend disbelief for the sake of enjoying a story. Highly recommended!

This blog combines two of my favorite hobbies: reading and baking. As a student in a library science program and the owner of a brand-new KitchenAid Stand Mixer, I’ve been consuming an ever increasing volume of books and baked goods lately. Follow along in my literary and culinary adventures!

My tentative career plan is to become a youth services librarian in a public library, so I’ve been reading a lot of children’s and young adult literature, both for school assignments and for my own reading pleasure. As I’ve grown older, I haven’t grown out of enjoying books like Go Dog, Go!, Charlotte’s Web, Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Mitten, and of course, The Phantom Tollbooth. I also still love baking my favorite childhood goodies, like TollHouse chocolate chip cookies, but I’ve begun to experiment with new recipes, attempting to bake muffins, bread, quiche, pie, and more!
